The Barrier

Registration, travel from a distant governorate and two nights’ accommodation can exceed a resident’s monthly income. The result is that the surgeons with most to gain from a course are the least able to attend, and training concentrates in Cairo by default.

What Could Be Supported

• Congress registration for trainee members
• Travel and accommodation for delegates from outside Cairo
• Places on laboratory and cadaveric courses
• Attendance at international meetings for members presenting accepted work

Who Would Be Eligible

Trainee and associate members in good standing, with priority to applicants presenting accepted work, applicants from units outside the main teaching centres, and applicants who have not previously received support.

Conditions

Recipients would be asked to submit a short report on what they gained, and to disseminate it within their own unit — a departmental teaching session or a written summary for colleagues who could not attend.
