Background

Egypt’s microsurgical capability was built in the laboratory. Professor Wael Mansour Fahmy established a replantation laboratory at the Maadi Military Academy in 1970 and one of the country’s first microsurgery laboratories in 1979. The training courses that followed, led by Professor Sobhi Hewidii and Professor Tarek Elgammal, trained the surgeons who carry the specialty today.

Basic Microsurgery Course

An introduction to working under the operating microscope for residents and early-career specialists.

• Microscope setup, ergonomics and instrument handling
• Microsuture technique and knot placement
• End-to-end arterial anastomosis
• Venous anastomosis and patency assessment
• Recognition and management of anastomotic failure

Prior surgical experience is expected; prior microsurgical experience is not required.

Advanced Reconstructive Microsurgery

For surgeons with established basic technique moving into free tissue transfer and replantation.

• End-to-side anastomosis and vessel grafting
• Free flap harvest, inset and monitoring
• Replantation sequence and decision-making
• Salvage of the failing flap

Cadaveric Programmes

Cadaveric sessions cover surgical approaches, flap anatomy and dissection technique under supervision, run in partnership with university anatomy departments.
